Chiropractic Adjustments

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

In basic terms, the chiropractic adjustment refers to the process in which the doctor of chiropractic skillfully applies controlled force into one or more subluxated vertebrae of the spine. The adjustment is safe, natural, and non-invasive. The type of chiropractic adjustment performed will be determined by the needs of the patient.

The doctors at City Chiropractic are trained in a variety of chiropractic techniques. This training allows them to safely and effectively care for anyone, from the very young to the very wise.

What do chiropractic adjustments do?

Adjusting helps correct vertebral subluxations. Correcting subluxations reduces pain and inflammation, reduces muscle spasm and tension, and normalizes spinal biomechanics. More importantly, correcting subluxations can remove nerve irritation and interference, which can improve the overall health and wellness of the individual.

Chiropractic adjustments are the only way to eliminate vertebral subluxations and only the chiropractor is trained to detect subluxations and deliver the chiropractic spinal adjustment to correct subluxations.

I pop my own back, is that the same thing?

Unfortunately not, and popping your own back or neck may make things worse. Your spine is made up of 24 moveable vertebral segments. When one vertebrae becomes stuck, the others will try to make up the lost movement and become hyper-mobile, or loose. The purpose of a chiropractic evaluation and adjustment is to find the subluxated, or stuck, vertebrae and restore movement to that specific vertebral segment.

When you pop your own back, you are likely moving one of the hyper-mobile segments. This may provide temporary relief, but will ultimately result in the subluxated vertebrae becoming more stuck as it tries to stabilize the now hyper-mobile segments nearby. In fact, successful correction of subluxations is often dependent on the patient breaking the habit of popping their own neck or back.
