Fight or Flight Stress Response

Hans Selye, a pioneering researcher on cell function and developer of the modern stress theory (General Adaptation Syndrome, 1936), identified three stages of adaptation which a person goes through in response to stress. They are: Alarm, Resistance, and Exhaustion.
In the alarm stage the body recognizes a challenge or threat and goes into a “fight or flight” response, releasing the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol resulting in appropriate physiological changes. Some of the short term physiological responses to stress include:

It is said that there are no stupid questions and I believe that to be true, though certainly some questions are better than others. Unfortunately the answers to many questions are dependent on how that question is asked. For example, high blood pressure presents a significant health risk and research demonstrates that medication will lower blood pressure. The assumption, then, would be that taking a blood pressure medication and lowering existing high blood pressure to “normal” values would make one healthy. But is that actually so?
